The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

YA Contemporary fiction

Where on earth do I begin? I'm absolutely in love with this author. She's one of my best discoveries of 2016. How could I not read a book titled, 'The Sun is also a Star'? And that cover! Swoon. But it's what's inside the enticing exterior that will have you clutching your heart, smiling softly and marvelling at this thing we call life. The story illustrates beautifully how fate, the universe, whatever you want to call it, weaves its timely magic through every moment of our days. Natasha and Daniel are complete strangers but fate has other plans. Amidst the relentless bustle of New York's streets, the two teenagers are placed on one another's paths for the briefest of moments, but that's all it takes for them to fall in love, even though Natasha is reluctant to admit it. The book follows the pair through an intense 48 hours as Natasha appeals against her family's imminent deportation to Jamaica. All the while, Daniel is the luminous, hopeful dreamer that counters Natasha's logic and pragmatism. Natasha and Daniels' characters were brilliantly written. I know these two kids now. I've felt their hopes and uncertainties. I've felt their pain. I've walked a mile in their shoes and empathised with the stories of all the people connected to them. Nicola Yoon's writing is truthful, insightful and poignant. This book is a beautiful reminder that love can bloom in the most unlikely places, that we are all intimately connected, and that life has a funny way of giving us what we need, exactly when we need it. ;)
